UK ignores Russia’s requests on Berezovsky associate's murder case — embassy

The United Kingdom persistently rejects Russia’s requests on information concerning the investigation into Russian businessman Nikolai Glushkov’s murder case, the Russian Embassy in London said on Wednesday, TASS reports.

"Numerous attempts of the Embassy to obtain coherent answers from the Foreign Office, or Scotland Yard, in line with the international obligations of the UK, have failed. What causes bewilderment is the fact that the investigation is being conducted in secrecy and the British Side is absolutely refusing to engage with Russia," the embassy said in a statement.

"This is unacceptable from the point of view of diplomacy and international law," the statement continues. "Such blatant violation of accepted norms outlined in international agreements has no rational explanation, unless we are dealing with another operation of the British secret services."

"In accordance with the European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters 1959, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has forwarded a request for legal assistance in relation to the criminal case on the murder of Mr N.A.Glushkov opened in Russia," the Russian embassy said. "The murder of Mr N.A.Glushkov is one of the several deaths of our compatriots in the UK in the recent years, marked with the UK’s unwillingness to cooperate and to ensure transparency of investigation."

Glushkov was found dead at his London home on March 12. The Metropolitan Police said he had died from compression to the neck. At the same time, according to media reports, the businessman was strangled with a dog lead so investigators believe that the killer could have aimed at giving his death the appearance of suicide.

On March 16, Russia’s Investigative Committee launched a criminal case over Glushkov’s murder.
