Progress at talks between Washington and the Taliban radical movement (outlawed in Russia) on a possible US troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan reflects only a temporary idea of the US leadership, which cannot be considered as final, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday, Trend reports referring to TASS.

"Unfortunately, the decisions taken by Washington in this direction are not of a systemic and long-term nature from the viewpoint of the concept or some perspective analysis. The strategy changes nearly once in every two years, therefore speaking on the final recognition or something else in Washington’s actions in this direction ... I would be more accurate with these words," Zakharova noted. "I think that this is an opinion at this moment, nothing more."

Earlier, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, who led the US delegation at talks with the Taliban in Doha last week, in an interview with The New York Times said the US and Taliban officials "have agreed in principle to the framework of a deal in which the insurgents would guarantee Afghan territory is never used by terrorists." This could lead to a full pullout of US troops from Afghanistan in return for the Taliban’s deal to a cease-fire and to talk directly with the Afghan government, what they had persistently opposed in the past, he said.
