Slovenian President Danilo Turk on Thursday reiterated again that his country would strongly and continuously support Turkey's European Union (EU) membership, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

Turk made the remarks when addressing the Turkey-Slovenia Business Forum meeting in the Turkish largest city of Istanbul, Xinhua reported.

"Turkey and Slovenia got closer to each other in the recent past. Turkey strongly supported Slovenia's membership in the United Nations and NATO. We can never forget Turkey's support and want to give certain things in return," he said.

He noted that Istanbul has a promising future commercially.

Stressing that Slovenia is a medium economic power in the EU currently, Turk said that they want to become one of the most developed countries in the EU.

As such, Slovenia wants to promote its relations with Turkey, he noted.

"There are some obstacles in transportation between Turkey and Slovenia. However, these obstacles should not deter us from establishing networks of communications in the past," Turk added.

On Wednesday, after meeting with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul in Ankara, the Slovenia president had stressed that Slovenia displayed its active support to Turkey's accession to the EU during the Slovenian EU Presidency in the first six months of 2008.

Turkey became an EU candidate country in December 1999. The union launched accession talks with Turkey on Oct.3, 2005.
