30 workers were trapped after a blast in a coal mine in northern Turkey and rescue teams still could not reach them, Turkey's labor minister said on Monday.

Omer Dincer said efforts are underway to reach the workers at the Karadon coal mine in the Black Sea port city of Zonguldak, Anadolu Agency reported.

"I was told that workers had detonated a dynamite to open an underground gallery and automatic gas devices detected high methane in the mine. After that, workers had stopped working, cut electricity and started to wait. When methane level was measured 20 minutes after that, everything seemed normal. However, the blast occurred four minutes after that," Dincer said.

"We still have no clear information about how it happened," he said.

However, Dincer said the cause of the blast could be firedamp.

"All we can do is to keep our hopes alive and pray for them," he said.
