Turkish soldier killed, 3 wounded in PKK attack

One soldier of the Turkish security forces was killed and three others including a lieutenant were wounded in an attack by the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in southeast Turkey late on Tuesday, the provincial governor's office Wednesday said in a statement, Xinhua reported.

According to the statement, a group of PKK rebels opened fire at the Turkish commando troops in Gercus town in southeast province of Batman.

The statement added the wounded soldiers have been taken to the Military Hospital in Diyarbakir Province for treatment.

The Turkish armed forces said the PKK might intensify attacks over the summer when more PKK guerrillas arrive in Turkey from the mountainous areas in northern Iraq during warmer weather.

The PKK, labelled as a terrorist group by the Turkish government, the United States and the European Union, took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey. Some 40,000 people have been killed in the conflicts since then.
