Istanbul to set iftar record

A district in Istanbul hopes to set a world record with an iftar dinner for 40,000 people Saturday evening, Xinhua reported.
Esenler municipality set up three rows of tables totaling 10 km along Atisalani Avenue for iftar dinner, a traditional dinner during Ramadan to break the day-long fast.
Last year, the municipality hosted an iftar dinner for 15,000 people, and Esenler Deputy Mayor Orhan Oguz Turk hoped that this year's 40,000-people dinner would get them in the Guinness World Book of Records.
People began gathering at the tables since early afternoon in preparation for the 8 p.m. dinner.
The meal consists of water, rice, chicken, baklava, juice, dates and bread, and some attendees also brought their own iftar dinner from home.
The municipality distributed 10 tons of rice, 8 tons of meant, 1500 trays of baklava, 100,000 bottles of water, and 45,000 cups of ayran (a local yogurt-based beverage) and juice.
