Top prosecutor warns Turkey against relaxing headscarf ban

The chief prosecutor at Turkey's Supreme Court of Appeals has warned the government not to relax a ban on the wearing of headscarves at universities and in public offices, the state-run Anatolian Agency reported Wednesday, DPA reported.

Looking at domestic and international laws "we can clearly see that headscarves at universities and other educational institutions is not regarded within the scope of freedom of religion and conscience and contradicts the principle of secularism," a statement released by the prosecutor's office said.

The headscarf has been a recent subject of debate in Turkey after the country's higher education board advised universities that students should not be discriminated against based on their clothing.

"Decisions and rulings by political bodies must be in accordance with high judiciary and international law," the prosecutor's statement said.

In 2008 Turkey's Constitutional Court struck down an amendment to the constitution that would have repealed the headscarf ban
