Ten killed, 20 hurt in bus accident in Turkey

Ten people were killed and at least 20 seriously injured in a bus accident Wednesday in the northern Turkish province of Giresun, the semi-official Anatolia Agency reported.

A passenger bus, which was en route from Istanbul to the Black Sea city of Trabzon, turned over and caught on fire after hitting a signpost, authorities said, DPA reported.

The governor of Giresun said it was believed that the driver of the bus had fallen asleep at the wheel, private broadcaster NTV reported.

The bus was thought to have 43 persons aboard, four of them bus company personnel.

Road accidents occur frequently in Turkey and are often fatal.

In May 2010, 16 Russian tourists were killed when the driver of their bus apparently fell asleep while crossing a bridge, causing the vehicle to plunge into a stream.
