Turkey detains 20 people on suspicion of terrorism

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec.13 / Trend, A.Tagiyeva /

As a result of a Turkish security forces' operation as part of the fight against terrorism, 20 people were detained in the cities of Istanbul and Samsun in Turkey, Turkish Dogu Agency reported.

The detained individuals are suspected to be involved in a number of terror attacks and assisting terrorists.

On Sept.22, a PKK militant wing, part of the radical group Kurdistan Liberation Hawks (TAK) , claimed responsibility for the attack in Ankara. This attack killed three people and injured another 34.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK has been on-going for more than 25 years, claiming over 40,000 lives. The PKK is recognised as a terrorist organisation by both the UN and the EU.

PKK militants have previously threatened the Turkish authorities with intensified armed conflict if concrete steps are not taken to address the long-term Kurdish problem.
