Anti-terrorist operation was held in Istanbul this morning, as a result of which security forces detained dozens of people, the Sabah newspaper reported.

The detainees are suspected of involvement in the riots during Nowruz celebrations in various cities of Turkey, as well as involvement in a number of terrorist attacks and supporting the terrorists of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

PKK fighters regularly organize terrorist attacks both against the civilian population and the country's security forces.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which seeks creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for more than 25 years, it has claimed more than 40,000 lives. The UN and the EU recognized PKK as terrorist organization.

PKK militants have repeatedly threatened the Turkish authorities with intensification of armed conflict, if concrete steps to address long-term Kurdish problem are not taken.
