Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a telephone conversation with Turkish President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated him on his election as Turkeyˈs new president with peopleˈs direct vote, IRNA reported.

ˈI hope in the new era we will witness closer and friendlier ties between the two countries and the two countriesˈ mutual cooperation will further expand on regional issues,ˈ President Rouhani said during the telephone conversations.

The Iranian president pointed to the need for cooperation between the two countries in relation to Iraq, Syria and Palestine, and said, ˈCombating terrorism in the region, specially Iraq is one of the necessities for cooperation between the two countries.ˈ

President Rouhani voiced his concern over the conditions in Iraq, and said, ˈA legal government must be formed in that country as soon as possible.ˈ

He noted that it is important for Iran that the person who is approved by the majority of the Iraqi lawmakers has come to power.

During the phone conversation, Erdogan thanked Rouhani, and said, ˈIran-Turkey relations are rooted in history and the two countriesˈ relations will become closer in the new government and our cooperation on regional issues will be broadened.ˈ
