A coal mine in Turkey's Karaman province has collapsed, leaving 23 people under the rubble, TRT Haber TV channel reported on Oct.28.

Reportedly, eight people have already been rescued.

Currently, the operations to rescue the miners trapped under the rubble are underway.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz and Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Lutfi Elvan have gone to the scene of the accident, according to the TV channel.

A fire occurred at Isiklar coal mine in the Soma city of Turkey's Manisa province on Oct.27.

No injuries were reported, as 301 workers of the mine were evacuated.

A mine explosion occurred in the city of Soma on May 13, leaving 301 people dead and 486 more injured.

Turkey wrote off all the loan debts of the workers killed in the mine explosion. The Turkish government granted additional funds to the families of those killed in the mine accident.
Turkish police detained 25 people over the accident at the mine.

In total, there are 740 coal mines and 48,706 miners in Turkey.

Over 3,000 people have been killed and over 100,000 have received various injuries since 1941 to the present day in the mining accidents in Turkey.

Some 10.4 percent of all work accidents occur at mines in the country.

In the first four months of 2014, some 1,235 people have been killed as a result of the work-related accidents in Turkey, 103 of them females.

The previous worst mine accident in Turkey's history occurred in the province of Zonguldak in 1992, killing 263 workers.
