Turkey urges Russia to stop airstrikes on Syrian opposition

Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec.28

By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has urged Russia to stop the airstrikes on the positions of Syrian opposition, Milliyet newspaper reported Dec.28.

The prime minister pointed out that the military operations of Russian air forces in Syria primarily claim the lives of civilians.

After Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's appeal, Russia started airstrikes on the IS terrorist group (ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) and Jabhat al-Nusra on Sept.30.

The prime minister said that in many cases, Russia's military operations in Syria do not target the IS.

Relations between Russia and Turkey deteriorated after Turkish F-16 shot down Russian SU-24 bomber Nov.24. Ankara states that Su-24 entered its airspace, while Russian General Staff said that the plane didn't violate Turkey's airspace.
