Turkish PM: No plans to withdraw EU membership application

Turkey does not plan to withdraw its application for the European Union membership, but Brussels must understand that it is impossible to ensure its security without Ankara, said Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, Sputnik reports.

“We do not and did not have a decision to call back our application for EU membership. The European Union should think hard of the steps they are taking not for our sake, but for the sake of their own future,” Yildirim said.

The future and security of the European Union are impossible without Turkey, according to the prime minister.

Ankara applied for the EU membership in 1987, but negotiations on its accession began only in 2005.
