Iran has urged Turkey to start joint operations against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorist group in the north of Iraq, the Turkish media reported, Aug. 21.

The proposal was discussed in Ankara by the Chief of the General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Mohammad Hossein Bagheri and the Chief of the General Staff of Turkish Armed Forces Hulusi Akar.

Reportedly, Iran and Turkey are negotiating to start military operations in 9 places in the north of Iraq.

No other details of the forthcoming military operations are reported.

It should be noted that Bagheri visited Ankara on August 15 of this year.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for more than 30 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

The UN and the European Union list the PKK as a terrorist organization.
