By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Construction of the railway (GAZIRAY) in Turkey’s Gaziantep province is nearing completion, a source at the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend.

According to the source, construction of 99 percent of the GAZIRAY railway has been completed.

The ministry noted that the total project cost is 1.2 billion Turkish liras ($208 million). The length of the railway in the Gaziantep province is 25 kilometers.

“Five kilometers of the new GAZIRAY railway system will account for an underground tunnel, for the construction of which 800 million Turkish liras ($138.6 million) were allocated,” the ministry said.

As part of the construction project, 17 stations, one bridge, eight underpasses and six overpasses will also be built, according to the source.

“The construction of the railway began in May 2014 and it is expected that GAZIRAY will begin operating in early 2020,” the ministry said.

Turkey’s first railway was built in Izmir province in 1860. Its length was 357 kilometers.
