Turkey unveils eight-month data on passenger traffic at Istanbul airport

The new airport in Istanbul served over 16.2 million passengers from January through August 2020, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend on Sept.8.

According to the ministry, during the reporting period, more than 5.2 million passengers were served on domestic flights, and over 11 million passengers were transported by international flights.

Meanwhile, 125,018 flights were carried out through the new Istanbul airport, including 40,268 on domestic routes and 84,750 on international flights.

"From January through August 2020, the volume of freight traffic through the new Istanbul airport amounted to 536,409 tons, of which 54,906 accounted for domestic flights and 481,503 for international flights", the ministry said.

New Istanbul Airport served 52.6 million passengers in 2019.

The opening ceremony of the new airport was held in Istanbul on October 29, 2018. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mehmet Cahit Turhan attended the ceremony.

Istanbul's third airport is located in the northern part of the city.
