The Azerbaijanis living in various countries of the world and the Diaspora organizations of Azerbaijan are protesting in connection with the renaming of Maryland Avenue in the California’s Glendale city to “Artsakh”. In connection with this, the Diaspora organizations of Azerbaijan circulate letters of protest, the Azerbaijani State Committee on Work with Diaspora said in a statement Oct. 12.
The protest letters say that Karabakh is originally an Azerbaijani land.
"Despite the fact that various international organizations led by the UN have repeatedly adopted resolutions, appeals, etc., to ensure the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and put an end to the aggressive policy of Armenia, the taking of the above action in California causes serious regret and disappointment," said the statement.
"The assigning of the “Artsakh” to the avenue in the country, which is the co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, calls itself the cradle of democracy, and, as a member of the UN Security Council, has voted for resolutions 822, 853, 874, 884 on liberation of Azerbaijani lands from the occupation, is a manifestation of double standards and an attempt to support Armenia's aggressive policy. The relevant campaign has been launched and a petition has been prepared in order to suppress the attempt to support the aggressor," the protest letters say.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
