BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 29. The COP zones [blue and green] are fully equipped to meet the needs for environmentally friendly and resilient energy in Azerbaijan, Ayan Najaf, a member of the Coordination Council of the COP29 Operational Company, said at the signing ceremony of a memorandum with the Green Energy Power Plant LLC in Baku today, Trend reports.

"The primary focus of the COP area is on sustainable development concepts and long-term strategies. All elements must be validated and substantiated beforehand. We recognize that the physical infrastructure must be modified to guarantee sustainability and conform to the principles of long-term operation," she explained.

Najaf noted that structure of the Baku Olympic Stadium [where COP29 will be held] is designed for permanent use, where all energy sources are directed towards supporting eco-friendly solutions and hybrid supply models.

"We can be confident that we fully meet the criteria for sustainable energy consumption and can successfully demonstrate various models of this approach. For us, this has been a significant step forward. We have been able to use the results of the analysis to create practical solutions and establish new standards for sustainable development that could inspire others to take similar actions," she added.

To make it clear, the Blue Zone is for people registered with the UN body tasked with coordinating the global response to the threat of climate change – the UNFCCC, while the Green Zone is delivered by the COP's host country (called the Presidency).

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
