The commander of the anti-drug squad, General Hamid Reza Hossein-Abadi, reports Iran has burnt 54 tons of narcotics across the country, reported Press TV.

"A total of 54 tons of drugs were burnt all over Iran to mark the UN's International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, ILNA quoted Hossein-Abadi as saying on Sunday.

"20 tons of various kinds of illicit drugs were also burnt at the Olympic Hotel in Iran's capital Tehran in the presence of the country's top officials," he added.

According to the commander, Iranian police have managed to seize an incredible 1000 tons of illegal drugs being smuggled through different parts of the country last year.

Iran has made the world's largest drug seizures consistently in recent years with over 403 tons confiscated in 2006. Some 15,000 police personnel have been either martyred or wounded in the fight against drug trafficking, which has inflicted major financial losses on the Islamic Republic.

Iran's geographical position lies at the crossroads of drug smuggling from Afghanistan to the West. The country leads international efforts in fighting illicit drug trafficking, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

The Islamic Republic and the West have been coordinating their efforts to block the illegal drug trade from Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Taliban.
