Iranian drivers will get a 20-day extension to use their quota of subsidised petrol before its price changes.
The deadline for using heavily subsidised petrol comes as Iran gets ready for the second phase of its subsidy reform programme and higher petrol prices.
About 60 million litres of the super cheap petrol costing eight cents (USD) a litre are stored on drivers' petrol cards. If they aren't used by June 14, the petrol's price will go up to the semi-subsidised price of 32 cents a litre, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reports.
No final decision has been relayed to the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) about what the new petrol prices will be, or how much will be allocated to each driver, said NIOPDC head Jalil Salary.
Started in December 2011, the subsidy reform programme pays out $37 (USD), to Iranians while eliminating subsidies for energy carriers and some commodities. When it goes into effect, the second phase of the programme will usher in higher prices for water, natural gas, electricity, petrol and bread.
