Iran will unveil a number of new domestically-made radioisotopes in the current calendar year, the president's science and technology deputy, Nasrin Soltankhah, said.

She told the ISNA News Agency that the radioisotopes will be produced using 20 per cent enriched uranium to show the world that Iran pursues scientific and peaceful purposes in its nuclear programme.

Seven radioisotopes have so far been unveiled, she said, adding that radioisotopes are used in physical and biological researches and therapeutics.

The radioisotopes which are produced in Iran are mainly used for diagnosis and treatment of various cancers, or to alleviate cancer related pain.

In December 2010, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad officially unveiled five national radioisotope production plans. In January and February, four domestically produced radioisotopes were unveiled.
