Iran's shrimp farmers could boost their production of seafood by 40 to 50 per cent this year if they get the support promised to them by Iran's Fisheries Organisation (Shilat).
Last year (Iran's solar year ended on March 19) Iran produced 700 tonnes of seafood, a 10 per cent increase from the year before, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reports.
Shrimp production grew 2000 tons in the same period, said Arsalan Ghasemi managing director of Iran's fisheries union.
Production didn't increase across the board though, said Mr. Ghasemi who pointed to late or improper distribution of eggs as the reason why some production decreased.
Mr. Ghasemi is worried about losing foreign markets like Iraq and Russia because officials haven't signed agreements.
