The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), a subsidiary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held a patrol mission on the occasion of June 8 - the World Oceans Day.

The mission was aimed to measure pollutants on the surface of water, studying the sea's ecology and the diversity of living creature species, the IRNA News Agency reported.

Established in 1960 as a body with functional autonomy within the UNESCO, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission serves as the focal point in the UN System for ocean observations, science, services and data exchange, and is recognized by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the competent international organization for marine science.
