Georgia is trying to attract the interest of both the Japanese government and business circles towards the on-going large scale construction projects in Georgia, primarily in the energy sector.
After Korean and then Turkish companies refused to finance the construction of the Namahvani hydroelectric power plant, the Georgian government submitted a proposal to Japanese business to finance its construction. This project includes a cascade of the hydroelectric plant Nenskra, which was to be built by the Chinese company Sinogidro.
"We had a fruitful meeting with the Japan Bank for International Development which had already financed the regeneration of Georgia's two hydroelectric power plants in 2005-2006. We continue to cooperate with the bank in this direction and its participation in new major projects. The Nenskra and Namahvani hydro power plants may be among them, Georgian Energy Minister Alexander Khetaguri said after the meeting with Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Yuichiro Hata, the Voice of America reported.
In turn, Hata said that there are a lot of interesting offers from Georgia and many of them within the purview of his department.
"We celebrate the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between our countries and would like to hope that these proposals will be seriously considered," he said.
