Azerbaijan, Baku, September 4 /Trend, I.Izzet/

Work on the modernisation of the Azerbaijani Navy, carried out in the territorial waters of the country, is not directed against other states, head of the Defence Ministry press service, Colonel Eldar Sabiroglu told Trend on Wednesday, expressing his attitude to the statement of Iranian Navy Commander, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayari.

According to him, work carried out by the Azerbaijani state in its territorial waters, is the sovereign right of the country.

"Armament, modernisation of the navy should not be considered as a step directed against other country. There can be no talk about the damage for peace and stability in the region," he said.

Several days ago Iranian Navy Commander, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayari told journalists that some countries are interested in disturbing peace and stability in the region and that some neighbouring countries jointly with other states take steps on the violation of peace in the Caspian sea.

Sayari, expressing his attitude to the purchase of missiles by Azerbaijan from Israel, noted that Iran follows all actions in the Caspian Sea and monitors them.

"The Caspian sea is the one of peace and friendship. The Caspian countries, by co-ordinating with those in the region, must preserve peace and friendship here," the Iranian Navy Commander said.
