BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. Reducing carbon emissions and preserving key natural resources are primarily essential to ensuring environmental sustainability, Salim AlMalik, Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), said at the Ministerial Forum on Green Good Governance, organized by "ASAN Xidmet" within COP29 in Baku today, Trend reports.

According to him, it promotes the responsible use of natural resources and supports the use of renewable energy.

“The development of clean production technologies is also on the agenda. Unfortunately, our time is limited. However, we must make efforts to implement laws aimed at protecting the environment, avoid harmful practices, and abide by international agreements," the director general explained.

He further said that ICESCO also collaborates with member countries to comply with international agreements and develop programs to ensure water security in member states.

"The implementation of the 'Green Cities' program and raising public awareness about environmental impact are also among the top priorities.

We monitor this process through independent oversight and research. Measures, studies, and management mechanisms are applied in this regard.

At the same time, we understand the importance of working together to develop a green economy model on the path to economic and environmental leadership for Islamic countries.

We must cooperate in this direction for the benefit of future generations," he added.

To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system.

A total of 198 countries are Parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.

The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
