BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. Samir Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan, took part in the event titled Tripling nuclear energy by 2050 as part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Trend reports via the ministry.

Mammadov highlighted that discussions on climate change at COP29 will play a crucial role in strengthening global cooperation to address the climate crisis.

"The Deputy Minister emphasized Azerbaijan's ambition to become a leader in renewable energy. He highlighted the country’s plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050 and to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity generation to 30 percent by 2030.

During the event, Mammadov also stressed Azerbaijan’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its dedication to transitioning to clean energy. He pointed out that the country is exploring the potential of nuclear energy, particularly innovative technologies like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as part of this transition. The Government of Azerbaijan, he noted, supports collaborative efforts to assess the role of nuclear energy, including SMRs, in the clean energy transition through the Atoms4NetZero initiative.

In closing, Mammadov invited other nations to join Azerbaijan in fostering global cooperation for a swift and effective shift to clean energy. He reaffirmed Azerbaijan's readiness to collaborate on projects that advance this cause.

The event concluded with a panel discussion featuring Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," the ministry statement said.
