BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. As part of COP29 in Baku, Trend News Agency proudly presents COP for Hope, a special project offering an unparalleled platform to hear from world leaders and trailblazers in politics, economics, science, and ecology, all united by a shared commitment to addressing today’s pressing climate challenges.
The head of the Chadian delegation, Hamid Abakar Souleymane, became our next interviewee.
In an interview with Trend, he said that as a result of COP29, developing countries will be able to agree on some new political and financial assistance, especially for Africa, which will facilitate the fight against climate change.
Souleymani expressed his pleasure of being in Baku.
“People here are very kind; they help everywhere, even on the street. I was just thinking to myself whether helping people is some kind of culture or gesture, but I understand that it is a behavior that has existed for a long time. That is why the Azerbaijani people are very friendly. The conference is very well organized. Everyone feels happy here.
We hope that as a result of COP29, developing countries will be able to agree on some new political and financial aid, especially for Africa, which will make it easier for us to fight climate change.
I want COP29 to lead to the mobilization of a new financial plan
to combat climate change. Let developed countries show leadership
in providing financial support that can enable developing countries
to realize the results of adaptation and mitigation. In this way,
we can call this conference COP29—promising ample opportunities for
finance and investment.
All developing countries, especially Africa, are suffering from the
impacts of climate change. Therefore, the world must fight the
climate crisis united,” he added.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system.
A total of 198 countries are Parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
