BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. On November 14, Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, met with Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Trend reports.
Berset expressed his appreciation for the invitation to COP29 and commended Azerbaijan’s efficient organization of the event within a limited timeframe. President Ilham Aliyev underlined that while host countries typically have up to two years for COP preparation, Azerbaijan managed to complete all arrangements within just 11 months.
The head of state stated that significant progress has been made in the COP29 negotiation process. Specifically, on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which has been under discussion for over 10 years, the first results have been achieved, and negotiations in this area will continue. The President also highlighted that statements from international financial institutions about a new financial target are viewed as positive signals. He expressed hope that a new financial target will be established at COP29, stressing that developing countries, in particular, have high expectations on this matter.
Berset emphasized the Council of Europe's focus on environmental crimes and climate change, highlighting their place on the organization’s agenda. He also pointed out the importance of upholding diversity among member states.
The head of state mentioned Azerbaijan’s joining 76 Council of Europe conventions. The significance of the Baku Process, which Azerbaijan initiated to promote dialogue between the Council of Europe and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, was also highlighted along with other cooperation matters in a variety of fields.
