BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. We expect the developed countries, which are at the forefront, to make more efforts to provide assistance to developing countries most affected by climate change to adapt and restore ecological balance, Rwanda's representative Prosper Habayomana told Trend at COP29.
“The problem of developing countries is basically adaptation, the right infrastructure, and clean energy. Financing is needed for health infrastructure, transportation, and other areas directly related to the effects of climate change. The message of COP29 to the world is that there are no sides of the world, global north or south; we are one team; we are all humanity, and now we need to focus on serving these goals.
Of course, we have different priorities, but everything must be taken into account; we all need this, and there is no place for egoism here. And there is no need to think that the other person's needs can wait or not be sufficiently provided for. You have to do what suits everyone. My message is this: let's consider each person's specific needs in addressing climate issues,” he noted.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system.
A total of 198 countries are Parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
