BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. I hope the Pacific region residents' voices will be heard at COP29, and we'll be allocated funding to address climate issues, John Taukave from Rotuma Island in Fiji, who's taking part in the conference on behalf of the Marshall Islands, told Trend.
"Azerbaijan, as the host of COP29, has organized the event excellently. I am very grateful to be here, to learn a lot, and to gain new insights, but at the same time, I want to be sure that our voices will be heard and promises will be fulfilled.
The Pacific region has great potential for financing climate projects. COP29 is an opportunity to emphasize the need to fulfill the financial commitments that were made earlier. At this point, we are focusing on the exploration or adaptation of wind energy, one of the important tasks we are trying to solve.
As you know, wind is a very powerful source of energy in the Pacific. We are combining the culture of indigenous peoples, in which our ancestors used wind energy to travel on their ships and canoes. Today, we use this in combination with modern science.
We have created the first of its kind ship in the Pacific, called 'Jurani' - a cargo vessel reducing carbon emissions by 80 percent and primarily using wind energy. Such projects catalize sustainable transportation and climate development," Taukave added.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system.
A total of 198 countries are Parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
