BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. The Ministerial Forum on Green Good Governance organized by ASAN xidmet is being held in Baku within the framework of COP29 in the Blue Zone, Trend reports.
Addressing the event, Ulvi Mehdiyev, Chairman of the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations under the President of Azerbaijan, emphasized that the Azerbaijani government is strongly committed to sustainable development in response to global climate change.
According to him, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, realizing the importance of progress in this area, approved “Azerbaijan 2030: National Priorities for Socio-Economic Development”.
“This strategic document reflects key areas that shape our long-term vision. The fifth goal among these priorities is particularly important as it ensures the creation of a clean environment and turns Azerbaijan into a country of green development.
The efforts of Azerbaijan towards sustainable development have accelerated since the chairmanship of COP29. Hosting COP29 in 2024, which our government has defined as the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World," underscores our commitment. COP29 promises to be a milestone, bringing together representatives from different nations for this event. Building on the progress made at COP28, this year's conference could lead to meaningful outcomes, including advancing concrete, timely commitments to reduce emissions, and increasing transparency in climate finance and enforcement.
The State Agency for Citizen Services and Social Innovation, under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, knows that international cooperation is essential to achieving goals that will not only protect our planet but also ensure a safe environment for future generations. This shared vision is the reason why we are all gathered here today. As members of the public sector, we play a unique role as catalysts and help our governments strengthen their skills in implementing nationally determined contributions,” he added.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system.
A total of 198 countries are Parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
