U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Lebanon should not tolerate any attempt to discredit the UN special tribunal investigating the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon Thursday said in a statement on its website.
The statement also quoted Clinton as saying the United States support Lebanon's sovereignty, independence, stability and support the country for developing strong and effective state institutions, Xinhua reported.
According to the statement, Clinton had spoken to Lebanese President Michel Suleiman by phone on Wednesday.
Recent reports said the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon could indict members of the Lebanese Shiite armed group Hezbollah, while the Hezbollah said investigation work has been misled by false witnesses, leading to a political crisis in the country.
