BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 19. Romania is firmly committed to implementing the necessary measures to address climate change, said the country’s Minister of Environment, Waters, and Forests Mircea Fechet as he addressed the COP29 summit with his national statement, Trend reports.

"Romania, together with all EU member states, is firmly committed to implementing the necessary measures to address climate change, both in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to its adverse effects," he said. The minister highlighted Romania’s long-term strategy to achieve climate neutrality by mid-century and the country’s National Energy and Climate Plan, which includes sectoral measures to ensure that the path to neutrality aligns with the EU’s NDC for 2030.

Romania has also adopted a new national strategy for climate change adaptation, Fechet revealed: "This summer, we approved a new national strategy for adaptation to climate change, with a dedicated action plan containing specific measures for 13 economic and social sectors".

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, including financial hurdles, Fechet stressed the importance of international collaboration: "At COP29, the negotiation of the NCQG is complex and reflects current global tensions, but also opportunities for international collaboration to address one of the greatest challenges of our times, mobilizing sufficient resources to fulfill the goals of the Paris Agreement".

He further emphasized that achieving Romania’s climate ambitions requires the involvement of all sectors, stating: "The involvement of all entities is crucial in delivering on our climate ambitions."

He pointed to Romania's focus on partnerships with the private sector for energy, transport, and industry decarbonization. "In Romania, we are currently prioritizing the development of partnerships with the private sector on energy transport and industry decarbonization," Fechet said.
