BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 19.The “One Health Conference” was held today in Baku within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), Trend reports.
According to information, addressing the event, Deputy Chairman of the Food Security Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (FSA) Zakiyya Mustafayeva noted that the concept of "One Health" is based on the unity of all parts of the ecosystem. It considers problems of people, animals, and the environment not separately but together - it is an integrated approach to balance and optimize the health of this complex.
The concept is particularly relevant in areas such as food and water safety, nutrition, zoonotic disease control, pollution management, and antimicrobial resistance. It mobilizes many sectors in different areas of society to work together. The interaction of sectors as diverse as public health, environmental health, agriculture, and food security is an important prerequisite for the productive realization of the concept, both nationally and internationally, to address the challenges posed, including the prediction and prevention of threats to humans, animals, and the environment.
Therefore, the protection of public health in our country is considered to be the responsibility of every organization playing a role in this field. Within the framework of the concept of “One Health” applied to protect the living world of the planet, important steps are being taken in our country.
Mustafayeva emphasized that the goal of FSA within the framework of the mentioned concept is to promote the application of this approach at the national level to implement the most effective methods of monitoring and combating problems that pose a threat to public health, damage nature, and the environment, as well as cause serious economic losses, as well as further expansion of cooperation with specialized structures. In this context, she talked about the development of the draft “National Strategy for 2025-2030 on Prevention and Strengthening of Zoonotic Diseases Control with Application of One Health Concept in the Republic of Azerbaijan” in order to solve the problems related to zoonotic diseases.
The event featured presentations on the topic. A panel discussion on the mentioned National Strategy was held. Detailed information on the Strategy was presented during the discussion, which was attended by representatives of APBA, the Ministry of Health, the Agrarian Services Agency under the Ministry of Agriculture, the Medical Territorial Units Management Association, ADA University, as well as several other specialized institutions, including representatives of various research centers and universities.
The document noted that the risk of zoonotic diseases, food hazards, and foodborne diseases, the threat of resistance to antimicrobial drugs, control of zoonotic diseases and special measures for their elimination, and other issues are widely covered in Azerbaijan. Opinions were exchanged on the issues reflected in the strategy.
Following the results of the event, final discussions were held and relevant decisions were made.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on November 11. It is the largest event organized by Azerbaijan to date, and the first time in the region that it is being held in Azerbaijan.
Within COP29, the highest level event - the summit of world leaders on climate action – was held on November 12–13.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 Presidency has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
In addition to being a top priority that creates the conditions for action, creating climate finance will also help fulfill the 1.5°C pledge by bringing everyone together.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
