BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 19. Costa Rica strengthens efforts to combat the climate crisis and decarbonization of energy, Costa Rican Minister of Environment and Energy Franz Tattenbach Capra said in a national statement at the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, Trend reports.
"Costa Rica, despite having the lowest historical debt on greenhouse gas emissions, is already facing serious consequences of climate variability and global warming. The country has made significant progress in understanding climate risks and ecosystem challenges and in identifying and implementing the necessary actions,” she said.
Tattenbach Capra pointed out that Costa Rica has its sights set high with ambitious goals for sustainable development and decarbonization. However, to hit the nail on the head, they’ll need more resources and clear signals to steer these efforts in the right direction.
“We are an ambitious country, and we hope to become even more ambitious if we receive clear signals and additional resources to implement these actions,” she noted.
The minister also underscored the significance of climate justice as a crucial piece of the global puzzle, noting that if countries like Costa Rica do not receive sufficient incentives, ambition will be limited.
“Countries like ours continue to subsidize the growing loss and damage caused by historical emissions, and this is compounded by insufficient efforts to reduce emissions at the global level,” she added.
