BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 18. Like a river swelling with the spring thaw, the flow of passengers riding the subway in Azerbaijan surged by 6.2 percent from January through October this year.
The data obtained by Trend from the country's State Statistics Committee shows that the number of passengers who used the subway reached 188.9 million people.
Furthermore, for the past 10 months of this year, road transport, which takes the lion's share in the transportation sector, has moved a whopping 115.1 million tons of cargo and carried a staggering 1 billion 495.7 million passengers. This marks a growth spurt of 8.4 percent and 9.5 percent, respectively, when stacked against the same stretch of time last year. It’s a no-brainer that a whopping 95.3 percent of passengers hitched a ride on buses, while a mere 4.7 percent opted for the shuttle buses. The cargo turnover has taken a leap of 16.6 percent, while passenger turnover has also seen a healthy bump of 10.8 percent.
In the meantime, a whopping 3.3 million passengers, or a hefty 39.5 percent increase, took to the skies from January to October this year; a staggering 99.9 percent of the flying was handled by state-owned carriers, leaving just a mere 0.1 percent for the private sector. The wheels of cargo transportation have been turning faster, with a jump of 17.6 percent, bringing the total to a hefty 341,200 tons.
