BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 18. We are all united in the fight against climate change, said Attila Steiner, representative of the Hungarian presidency in the European Union (EU) Council, at a press conference as part of the COP29, Trend reports.
"It is our responsibility to ensure the ambitious and credible implementation of the global stocktake, at both national and international levels, in alignment with the 1.5°C target, following the decision made in Dubai," he said.
Steiner highlighted three key priorities for the EU: tracking progress on the global stocktake, recognizing existing solutions for implementation, and sending ambitious signals regarding practical solutions for the years ahead.
"Both the business sector and the public are demanding strong signals from us regarding how the energy transition will unfold. Clearly, climate change mitigation is one of the primary tools in this process," he added.
He also highlighted the critical role of the Paris Agreement in driving down greenhouse gas emissions and attaining the objective of capping global warming at 1.5°C, positioning climate change mitigation as a pivotal element of its execution.
"COP29 must reaffirm our determination to phase out fossil fuels and accelerate the energy transition, as agreed last year. This transition is possible, and the EU's example shows that we can maintain sustainable economic growth while significantly reducing emissions," Steiner said.
