Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili has met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay and discussed the progress achieved by Georgia in the human rights protection sphere.
The parties paid attention to the facts of human rights violation in the breakaway regions, especially along the so-called border line.
The high commissioner underscored that after this visit the UN will pay special attention to this issue and will make every effort to change the situation.
She positively assessed the methods and the mechanisms used by Georgia in human rights protection, adding that this trend should be continued.
Pillay believes that the development strategy worked out by Georgia is of great significance in this context. She pointed out that the progress achieved by Georgia in this sphere will positively affect the process of signing the association agreement.
The Georgian president thanked the UN high commissioner for the support and expressed hope that at the 2015 session, the UN member states will support Georgia's accession to the Human Rights Council.
Margvelashvili went on to add that Georgia attaches special attention to the activity of this council.
The president underscored that if elected Georgia will make a significant contribution to the development of the standards on human rights protection both on local and international levels.
