Georgia's First Deputy Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani met on June 30 with the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship Special Representative for the South Caucasus, Co-chair of the Geneva International Discussions, Ambassador Angelo Gnaedinger.

Gnaedinger congratulated Georgia on signing the EU Association Agreement.

For his part, Davit Zalkaliani highlighted the opportunities opened up by the association and the free trade agreement for Georgia, including its occupied territories.

The Foreign Ministry of Georgia told Trend that the parties also mulled the results of the 29th round of Geneva International Discussions, which were held on June 18. They also stressed the importance of keeping the Geneva format of talks.

Large scale military action was launched between Georgia and Russia in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008.

Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August.

In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and called the two unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
