NAKHCHIVAN, Azerbaijan, October 20. The construction of the hydroelectric plant at the Heydar Aliyev Reservoir, which was commissioned in 2006, marks a historic first step toward ensuring electricity supply through renewable energy sources, Director of the hydroelectric plant at the Heydar Aliyev Reservoir Tarkhan Gafarov said in an interview with Trend.

He stated that the plant was built under an agreement signed on December 19, 2004, between the Cabinet of Ministers of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the "Joint Initiative of Cengiz Inşaat AŞ and Aksoy" of the Republic of Türkiye. The reservoir's capacity is 100 million cubic meters.

"The station is equipped with two hydro turbines of 2 megawatts each and one hydro turbine of 0.5 megawatts. In July 2006, commissioning work was completed, and the plant was connected to the energy system. The power transformers used to connect the plant's energy to the 35 kV 'Shahbuz' transmission line were manufactured in the Republic of Turkey, while the turbines and generators were made in France. The cost of the project, including installation and commissioning of the station, was fully covered by the funds generated by the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic's State Energy Service from the sale of electricity. The plant currently produces 7 million kWh of energy annually, and plans are in place to increase production to 12 million kWh," Gafarov said.
