Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 17
Trend:
Armenian Armed Forces have again committed a provocation at the Azerbaijani-Armenian state border, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Jan. 17.
On Jan. 17 morning, Armenian armed forces opened fire at the Azerbaijani army positions located at the state border in the territory of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district.
The Armenian army opened fire from a “Bumblebee” portable flamethrower, said the ministry.
There were no casualties among the Azerbaijani servicemen.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reiterated that if the Armenian side continues such provocations, Azerbaijan’s response will be more harsh.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
