BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 4. The Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan has announced events to be organized within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), Trend reports.
According to the information, a section dedicated to the events to be organized by the ministry within COP29 has been created on the website of the ministry.
Thus, these events include a high-level roundtable on “Green Digital Activities”, a ministerial roundtable on “Green Urban Transportation”, “Sustainable Digital Middle Corridor”, and a high-level panel discussion on international aviation and climate change.
Meanwhile, a high-level round table on green digital action, to be held during Science, Technology, and Innovation/Digitalization Day, is expected to cover how digital technologies can transform action on climate change.
The discussions will be mainly on the following topics: integrating digital innovation into climate strategies; improving climate monitoring and adaptation through digital tools; showcasing successful sustainable development initiatives; and creating opportunities for future collaboration to adapt digital transformation to global climate goals.
The thematic, in-depth study on "Greening Urban Transport" will be the focus of the Ministerial Roundtable on "Greening Urban Transport" to be held during Urbanization, Tourism, and Transport Day.
The event will set the stage for joint planning between nations, developing sustainable infrastructure, and integrating sustainability into country policies. The roundtable is expected to develop effective strategies for integrating sustainable urban transport into national, regional, and city planning frameworks. The event will also foster closer cooperation among stakeholders and governments to accelerate the decarbonization of urban transport.
The Ministerial Roundtable “Sustainable, Digital Middle Corridor”, to be held on the sidelines of the Urbanization, Tourism, and Transport Day, will discuss recent developments in sustainable development and the promotion of digitalization in the Middle Corridor and other corridors globally, as well as upcoming initiatives. The event will convene ministers and leaders of organizations from the region and beyond. The roundtable will serve as a high-level platform for in-depth discussions on the development of sustainable and reliable transport networks. It will also strengthen regional cooperation for collaboration and climate performance.
The Urbanization, Transport, and Tourism Day will feature a high-level panel discussion on “International Aviation and Climate Change”. Co-organized by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Energy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the event will assemble ministers, government officials, industry leaders, and other stakeholders to engage in an important dialogue on the latest developments in the decarbonization of international aviation.
The international aviation sector accounts for about 2 percent of total global CO2 emissions. Although this number is relatively small compared to other sectors, it is predicted that it may increase soon. At a time of increasing demand for air transportation, strong and preventive measures must be taken to reduce these emissions. Otherwise, a significant increase in emissions is expected.
To note, it is not possible to find a reliable alternative to liquid fuels in the aviation sector in the near future. Therefore, urgent global action to accelerate the global scale-up of the development and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), low-carbon aviation fuel (LCAF), and other clean energy sources is needed to achieve the long-term global goal for international aviation (LTAG). This action is in line with ICAO's long-term global goal of achieving 'net zero carbon emissions' for international aviation by 2050.
