BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 23. BRICS is a key player in tackling climate change, said President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as he addressed the participants of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Trend reports.

"There is no doubt that the greatest responsibility falls on rich countries, whose history of emissions has led to the climate crisis we face today. We need to go beyond the promised and unfulfilled $100 billion a year and strengthen the mechanisms for monitoring the commitments made. Scientific data expresses an unprecedented sense of urgency. We have only one planet, and its future depends on collective action," he said.

He pointed out that emerging countries must also do their part to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.

"At COP30 in Belém, we will show together that it is possible to reconcile greater ambition in our Nationally Determined Contributions with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. During Brazil’s BRICS presidency, we want to reaffirm the bloc’s mission to advocate for a multipolar world and less asymmetrical relations between countries," the president added.
