PwC hosted a pivotal session on decarbonisation, bringing together some of Azerbaijan's foremost experts in the steel, cement, construction, and energy sectors to discuss the path to net-zero for hard-to-abate industries. The event featured notable speakers, including Celal Oven, Production Director of Baku Steel Company, Elmar Mammadov, Sustainability Manager of NORM Cement, Nariman Topchibashev, CEO of PMD Projects, and Hikmat Abdullayev, Deputy Vice President of SOCAR. Together, they examined the challenges and opportunities faced by high-emission sectors in Azerbaijan.

Moderated by Dr. Akif Koca, Partner at PwC Turkiye, the panel explored the need for a holistic approach to decarbonisation. “Achieving a green transition requires us to consider the entire value chain, from raw materials and production processes to product design and market readiness," said Dr. Koca. He emphasized that this transformation must integrate a circular perspective, addressing logistics, recycling, and design considerations to ensure sustainability. According to Dr. Koca, the green transition is a long-term process that will evolve through strategic competition between pioneering green firms and traditional carbon-intensive players.

The session delved into a range of decarbonisation levers, including the adoption of renewable energy, alternative fuels, electrification, carbon capture, and digital solutions. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, satellite monitoring, and drones, were highlighted as effective tools for tracking and reducing carbon emissions, illustrating how technological innovation is becoming integral to achieving sustainability goals.

Gunay Asgarova, Senior Manager at PwC, concluded the session with practical guidance on industry norms and reporting standards that can help companies evaluate their ESG profile more realistically. She emphasized the importance of reporting frameworks, climate change related risks & opportunities, related financial disclosures and data quality in supporting informed decisions that align with a company’s decarbonisation targets.

This session, held within the framework of COP29, underscores PwC’s commitment to fostering collaboration across sectors and providing industry leaders with the insights and resources needed to drive sustainable change. The discussions reinforced PwC’s vision of a multi-faceted green transition, urging companies to balance environmental objectives with economic considerations.
