BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. COP29 has brought nearly 10,000 NGO representatives from around the world, creating a truly democratic space for civil society, said Aygun Aliyeva, Executive Director of the Agency for State Support to NGOs, as she addressed the summit participants, Trend reports.

"Today, we are united under a common banner: advancing climate action through South-South Cooperation with a special emphasis on the invaluable role of NGOs," Aliyeva stated, emphasizing Azerbaijan’s commitment to inclusive dialogue and global cooperation as the host of COP29.

She highlighted Azerbaijan's ongoing efforts to ensure that civil society remains central to climate negotiations. "By enabling diverse perspectives to be heard, we are working towards climate goals that are not only ambitious but fair and just for all."

Particular attention was given to the needs of developing nations. "Today’s event reflects Azerbaijan’s unwavering priority: ensuring that Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), often the most vulnerable to climate impacts, are active participants in shaping climate solutions," she noted.

The National NGO Forum of Azerbaijan also received special recognition for its efforts in facilitating global partnerships. "This forum has paved the way for an enduring legacy of collaboration that will continue beyond COP29, inspiring ongoing partnerships among the NGOs present here today and fostering solidarity across borders," Aliyeva remarked.

Aliyeva reaffirmed the indispensable role of NGOs in addressing the climate crisis. "NGOs bring hope, advocate for change, and represent the voices of communities. They are the vital bridge between policy and people, translating global commitments into local actions that transform lives," she said.
