BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. The Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Sahiba Gafarova welcomed Lord Fakafanua Fatafehi, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Kingdom of Tonga, Trend reports, referring to the parliament’s press service.
They emphasized the negative impact of climate change on all countries, stressing the importance of global collaboration to address these issues, and discussed Azerbaijan's collaboration with the Commonwealth of Nations, highlighting the humanitarian and technical assistance provided through the organization to support small island states.
Lord Fakafanua Fatafehi emphasized the pressing challenges encountered by small island states, asserting that for these nations, climate change transcends environmental concerns and emerges as a critical security imperative. He conveyed appreciation for Azerbaijan's backing, especially its emphasis on amplifying the voices of small island states at COP29, which he perceives as elevating their issues to a more prominent stage.
The conversation also covered bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Tonga, with particular mention of the recent visit of Tonga's Prime Minister to Azerbaijan and the signing of the Baku Declaration.
During the conversation, the two sides exchanged views on potential areas of cooperation between our parliaments.
In turn, Speaker Gafarova provided detailed information on the situation in the region, the realities of Azerbaijan, and the ongoing work the country is doing in its newly liberated territories at the meeting.
