BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. Baku's appeal could lead to a new approach, a partnership with governments, communities from conflict-prone regions, local actors, and relevant UN agencies, the Special Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Secretary of State Jennifer Lee Morgan, said, Trend reports.
She made the remark during a high-level panel discussion on "Climate and Peace: Joint Action on International Climate Policy: A Joint Partnership for Peace and Security" at COP29.
Morgan noted that Baku's appeal could unite climate change efforts and expand action in urgency.
“I believe that overall we must ensure that we move from commitment to real transformative action. We know the key to avoiding future risks and damage to human security, international peace, and stability. This is the way to reduce emissions.
We must all work hard in support of a local COP presidency to make it a success and one that delivers results on climate crisis mitigation, finance, adaptation, damage, and loss,” she added.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) opened on November 11. COP29, which is being held at the Baku Olympic Stadium, will continue until November 22. It is the largest event organized by Azerbaijan to date, and the first time in the region that it is being held in Azerbaijan.
The key expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.
A total of 14 initiatives have been put forward by the COP29 Chairmanship.
