BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 16. Many new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are being developed without considering the latest data, Global Director of NDC Partnership Support Unit Pablo Vieria said, Trend reports.

He made the remark during the session themed "Making climate commitments a reality: parliaments' role in raising mitigation ambition and implementing Nationally Determined Contributions" at the COP29 Parliamentary Meeting organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Azerbaijani Parliament today.

"One form of support we provide through our members is summarizing nearly a decade of commitments from the first two rounds of NDCs. There is still much to be done, and strengthening governments' accountability for fulfilling their commitments is a key task that requires global attention," he said.

Vieira emphasized that countries need to ensure their commitment to climate action, including the development of NDCs, which must be presented next year.

"Favorable policies, legislative and regulatory frameworks are needed to advance climate action and mobilize financing, as well as coordination, capacity, and transparency," he added.

The Parliamentary Meeting is being held in Baku within COP29 under the joint organization of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Azerbaijani Parliament.

Sessions at the meeting are discussing the real impacts of climate change, the parliaments' role in making climate commitments a reality and raising mitigation ambition and implementing nationally determined contributions, unpacking the global climate finance architecture and mobilizing resources and streamlining access to climate finance, enhancing resilience in the face of climate change and scaling up adaptation and strengthening local empowerment.

The event is attended by IPU President Tulia Akson, Speaker of the Parliament of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, as well as IPU Vice President from Azerbaijan, MP Sevil Mikayilova.
